Use a farming optimizer

The community wiki hosts a Farming Optimizer tool. You import your save file (save_file_live.es3) and it reads your stats, then ranks stages by gold per hour or XP per hour using the game data. This beats guessing, because the best stage depends on your own numbers. Steps: in game settings, enable the option to pin the log window so it records your clear times. Open the tool and import your save. Pick your strongest hero. Enter your clear time for a baseline stage and for the highest stage you can clear. The tool then lists the best stages to farm for your account.

XP farming versus gold farming

First decide whether you need XP to level or gold to buy out the Rune Tree, because the best stage differs depending on the goal. Community-reported examples (unverified): an XP route around 2-2 Nightmare can produce roughly 14 million XP per hour while keeping 100% XP retention, and a gold route such as 1-3 Wasteland Nightmare leans toward gold per clear. These numbers shift with your gear and multipliers, so use the optimizer rather than copying a stage blindly. The core principle still holds: farm the highest stage you can clear in seconds. Clears per hour matter more than raw stage difficulty.
