S Best Knight Build
Frontline Tank · Free · Knight + Priest + Ranger
Tanky frontline anchor for beginner and boss-push teams. Stabilize the front before stacking damage.
A pure tank built to be a wall, with almost no damage of his own. He is the best free starter and the most flexible frontline, but plan to use him as an HP mule that lets a Ranger or Hunter survive, not as a hero you main into the late game. Build him to out-survive whole waves, then let your back line carry the damage.

Overview
Knight is the recommended first hero and a free 500-gold unlock. With 130 base HP, 45 armor and 950 move speed, he is the only starter built purely to absorb punishment, which is what an idle team needs while your gear, Hero-dric Cube and Rune Tree are still weak. He sits front, eats hits, and buys time for your damage dealers. The honest framing is that he is a wall and little else. His own damage is minimal, so a lot of community guides do not recommend maining him. Most tier lists place him S or near-S as the best free tank early on, but once you reach mid and late content many of those same lists drop him to about C tier, valuing him only as an HP mule that lets a Ranger or Hunter survive. That is still a real job, just not a carry one.
Stat Priority
Stack survival first. Max HP and HP Regen keep him standing through full waves during long idle sessions, and Armor and Damage Reduction then cut incoming hits. Note that damage reduction is capped at 75%. Past that point more armor does nothing, so pour the surplus into HP and Damage Absorption instead. Block is a strong third defensive layer. The defensive route the community leans on is to stack HP alongside Block chance, Aegis, Physical Damage, block reduction and cooldown, then put about 7 points into all elemental resistances plus Damage Reduction and pour the rest into HP Regen. Only add Physical Damage once he reliably survives the stage you are farming, because a Knight that dies stalls the entire run. One damage milestone is worth knowing: community testing suggests around 52,000 damage without crit one-shots every normal mob in the game (unverified). Once you hit that, stop stacking more damage and shift to Cast Speed instead.
Skills & Leveling
A clean point plan: 8 points into Health Boost first, then one active skill and one point of Attack Damage, then everything into Armor from level 10. Aegis Field absorbs 110 damage for every ally inside it. This team-wide shield is the core of his value and scales with team size. Sacred Blade unlocks at level 30, raises attack roughly 50% and restores 2 HP per kill, giving him a self-sustain loop that keeps him topped up during farming. Unyielding Will grants one resurrection per stage, a free safety net on risky pushes. There is a catch with it though. The community reports a bug where dying under Unyielding Will at the end of a wave can clip you through mobs and reportedly trigger an anti-cheat flag (unverified). If that risk worries you, run Sacred Blade in that slot instead. Invest your second skill slot to run two of these.
Gear & Materials
Run a Sword + Shield and prioritize Max HP, Armor and Damage Absorption rolls. The simplest approach is to copy the Priest gear plan: stack Max HP percentage and chaos resistance with some flat Max HP on top. Skip movement speed entirely and use Shield Charge to reposition instead. Slot HP / Armor decorations through the Hero-dric Cube. Decoration sockets open at blue rarity, so even early Knight gear can take a defensive gem. Use Cube Synthesis (9 same-rarity items into one higher tier) to push his gear up, and feed everything else to Alchemy for gold. Hunt better bases in the item database and remember gear chests only drop from stage bosses during active play.
Team & Positioning
Knight always goes front. The safest free team is the Vanguard Trio (Knight + Priest + Ranger), where he tanks, Priest sustains and buffs, and Ranger deals safe backline damage. Keep his role honest here: he is the body that keeps your Ranger or Hunter alive, not a source of damage, so the back line still has to carry. If you want faster clears you can hand the front to Priest in the Speed Farmer comp, but for new accounts Knight up front is the lowest-risk foundation. Never stack two melee bruisers. Slayer overlaps his role and wastes a slot.
Runes & Progression
The Rune Tree unlocks at hero level 3 (about five minutes in). Open Rune of War (100g), then Rune of Growth (200g), then beeline Rune of Command to unlock formation slots. The third hero slot costs 150,000 gold and is the single highest-impact purchase in the game, so prioritize it ahead of most Synthesis spending. The second skill slot (50,000 gold) lets Knight run Aegis Field plus Sacred Blade together. Fund all of this with Alchemy gold rather than waiting on drops.
Farming vs Boss
For farming, hold the front on the highest stage you can clear in seconds and let your DPS work. Grind a gold stage like 2-7 Hell, then push toward 3-9 Torment once strong enough. For bosses, the X-10 act bosses that each require a Soul Stone, go full defense: Armor, Block, Damage Reduction and constant Aegis Field uptime. Act bosses like Archon Morkar have the highest HP in the game and the fight is a pure survival race. Soul Stones are only consumed on a win, so failed attempts are free. There is one expensive, late exception to his no-damage identity. With top cosmic gear, specifically a level 65 cosmic shield, a level 80 cosmic helmet and a level 82 cosmic sword, a kill resets his Shield Charge. That turns him into a fast Cast Speed farmer that dashes between packs. For that build you stack full Cast Speed, but treat it as a narrow late-game niche, not a plan for your early Knight.
Common Mistakes
Don't build Knight as a damage dealer too early. If he can't survive, the run dies with him. Don't keep farming offline expecting loot: offline grants gold and XP but zero chests, so 20 to 30 minute active sessions are far better for gear. And don't over-invest armor past the 75% damage reduction cap. Once you're there, pivot to HP and Damage Absorption (see the mechanics FAQ for the exact curve). Watch the Unyielding Will bug as well: dying under it at a wave end can clip you through mobs and reportedly trip an anti-cheat flag (unverified), so swap to Sacred Blade if you would rather not risk it. One niche exception is worth knowing: with top-end cosmic gear, killing an enemy resets his Shield Charge, which turns him into a fast Cast Speed farmer that dashes between packs. It is a late, expensive build, not something to plan your early Knight around.
